What is Professional Open Source?

Open Source is a technology movement. Thousands of Open Source projects are today available and propogated within an ever increasing developer community. However, not all of these Open Source projects can be termed as stable, mature and 'enterprise-ready'. A professional open source solution is one which meets a set of business and technology criteria to the extent that it provides a viable, professional, and mature alternative to an equivalent proprietary business solution.

What makes an Open Source solution 'Professional'?

In general, an Open Source solution freely available through an Open Source community should pass a set of business and technology criteria to be termed as 'Professional' enough to be adopted in an enterprise. Objectively, these crieria can be defined in terms of a Maturity Model that measures the effectiveness and 'professionalism' of an Open Source solution. InfoAxon has developed a Professional Open Source Maturity Model (POSMM) that helps us and our customers determine an objective set of criterias to gain confidence that the solution truely meets their requirements.

What is POSMM?

POSMM is a maturity model designed by InfoAxon. POSMM model measures criteria such as:

Business CriteriaTechnology Criteria
  1. Community Activity - How long has the Open Source community been active? What is the current and future activity indicators?
  2. Development Roadmap - Is there a clear Product development roadmap?
  3. Licensing - Is the licensing simple and business friendly?
  4. Market Reach - How well is the Open Source product implemented today in the market? What varied and proven implementations exist?
  1. Ease of setup - Easy, intuitive to setup Open Source product with a standard implementation indicate a professional mind set.
  2. Integration - Is the Open Source product easily integrated with other systems using Open Standards?
  3. Adherence to Open Standards - Stated, documented adherence to Open standards is a must for any Professional open source software.
  4. Documentation & Developer Support - Well documented functional and technical features to assist developers show a mature Open Source project.

How InfoAxon uses POSMM?

POSMM is our guiding model that helps us establish a 'sanity check' before introducing the Open Source technology in a business solution. Each business and technical criteria in the model has been provided a weighted score. InfoAxon evaluates various Open Source projects in specific business domains continuously. The feedback from this evaluation is used to score the criteria and determine the overall score of an Open Source solution. The final score determines whether the solution can be judged as 'Professional Open Source'. This rigrous evaluation with objective scoring methods ensures that a viable alternative to proprietary solution has been offered to our customers.
